El Impulso · 2011 – present

Fifteen years alongside the daily paper of Lara

Design, layout and build for the daily paper of Lara, first on Joomla and later on WordPress, with the newsroom trained on every version of the site.

The challenge

A paper that publishes dozens of stories a day cannot rely on someone arranging the front page by hand, nor on a technician being available every time a story goes out. And getting it right once is not enough: over fifteen years the content management system, the formats and the way people read the news all change, and the site has to change with them without stopping the newsroom.

What we did

We started in 2011 on Joomla and have been redesigning, migrating and versioning the site ever since, up to the WordPress it runs on today. Every version meant the same work: design and layout, a build configured around the newsroom's actual workflow, and training for the editorial team so it kept publishing on its own from day one.

El Impulso is the newspaper of Barquisimeto and the state of Lara. Its front page assembles itself from whatever the newsroom publishes: a lead story on the left, the breaking-news column in the centre and the remaining sections around them, all ordered by category and date.

It is the project that has taught us the most about what actually matters on a news site. It was never a commission with a delivery date: it was a content management system that ran out of road, a migration, several redesigns, and an editorial team that had to feel at home publishing again after every change.

The work on a site like this is not the launch but the day after: the newsroom has to publish fast, the advertising must not eat the reading, and the site has to hold up during the hours when everyone arrives at once.
